FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
It seems to me that new slang is coming out faster than we can keep up with it! Last week at our Sunday family dinner, my adult sons were teaching me slang, including alpha and sigma. As we all engaged in a lively conversation, laughing at the ridiculousness of some of the terms, it made me really think about our children and how we teach them when slang is okay to use and when slang is not okay to use.
As parents, what should you be aware of with slang?
When you hear your child using slang, have a conversation, asking what the term means and guiding as necessary. Your child may be saying something unkind or inappropriate and in some cases, may not fully understand what he/she is saying. The goal is to teach children when slang is okay to use, to whom they can use slang with, and in some cases, when slang should not be used at all. For instance, slang may be okay for informal conversations with a friend outside of school, but slang is not okay in the classroom setting or when addressing adults. I’ll never forget when one of my children called me “bruh” a couple of years back, and I thought I was going to fall over! I had to explicitly teach my children that calling me “bruh” was disrespectful.
Encourage your child to avoid casual slang with grown-ups and in formal settings, such as in the classroom.
For example, a boy may call his buddy “bruh” or “bro” at the park, but should not address a peer in the classroom by “bruh.” What started as a term for buddies, is now widely used to address anyone, regardless of gender. It is disrespectful for boys to call girls “bro” or “bruh,” and the use of casual slang like this in school when addressing peers and adults can blur the boundaries of respect and formality. To help you with these conversations, I’ve included some popular slang words below which we’ve heard around campus.
Here are some common slang definitions and their meanings:
- Alpha: Hierarchy of males based on looks and success. Alpha is the most successful, the best looking, and assertive. Sometimes meant to be disparaging.
- Sigma: Hierarchy of males based on looks and success. It has various meanings like dominant leader, cool and popular. Unlike an alpha, he doesn’t seek to lead or follow but is often portrayed as self-sufficient, independent, and confident. It’s considered a trendy, rebellious counterpart to the alpha.
- Ohio: Strange, bizarre, or cursed. It plays on the idea that unusual or weird things happen in the state of Ohio.
- Skibidi: Bad or not good. Refers to the “Skibidi Toilet” meme series, which involves surreal battles between singing toilets and humanoid TV heads in CGI animations.
- Beta: A person who is perceived as passive, weak, or effeminate
- Rizz: Short for “charisma,” often used to describe someone’s ability to attract or charm others, particularly in romantic or flirtatious contexts. For example, if someone has “rizz,” they are good at flirting or picking up potential romantic partners.
- No cap – This phrase means “no lie” or “I’m being honest.” It’s often used to confirm the truth of a statement, like “That test was hard, no cap.”
- Delulu – Short for delusional, this word is often used humorously to describe someone who has unrealistic or wishful thinking.
- Sus – Short for suspicious, it’s used to describe someone or something that seems off or questionable.
- Bet – A way to say “yes” or “okay”.
I leave you with this. I’m not saying slang is bad, but we need to instruct our children to have discernment (Romans 12:1-2) in knowing when and where slang should or should not be used.
Educating with eternity in mind,

LITERACY FAMILY NIGHT
Our Second Annual Literacy Week for Pre-K through fifth grade is quickly approaching! Mark your calendars for Family Literacy Night on Thursday, October 3rd and the Vocabulary Parade on Friday, October 4th!
Students will be taking part in themed literacy activities each day of the week September 30-October 4, 2024. Students will not dress up this year except for Friday’s Vocabulary Parade. We are encouraging students in grade K-5 to dress up as their favorite vocabulary word on Friday, October 4th! This can be really simple such as the word and definition written on a piece of paper and worn or held or you can be more creative and dress to enhance your word. For example: A student could choose the word “blossom” and wear a flowered dress with a flower headband. Here are the guidelines: 1. Show your word on the costume. 2. Write the definition on the costume. 3. Your word must be wholesome, edifying, and build others up! Ephesians 4:29.
We are having our Family Literacy Night on Thursday, October 3, 2024, from 5:00 PM-6:15 PM. Your child will be able to pick a room in which a staff member will read a book and then your child will participate in a craft or activity. We will have two sessions so each of your children can pick two different book rooms.
Please see the link below if you would be willing to help make Literacy Night possible with a donation. Your partnership is much appreciated!
Can’t wait to see you there!
