Arizona Summer: Writing My Way to Third Grade
Students will explore Arizona-themed topics, summer adventures, and third grade readiness while building writing skills step-by-step. Each day will include read alouds, thinking maps, sentence-building practice, paragraph writing, and sharing. Students will follow a consistent and engaging routine that includes a welcome writing warm-up, a read aloud with discussion, a thinking map activity to organize ideas, sentence-building practice to expand and strengthen writing, independent writing time, sharing, and a closing reflection with prayer. Day 1 will focus on Arizona adventures and narrative writing, Day 2 on opinion and persuasive writing connected to summer and becoming a third grader, and Day 3 on how-to writing and giving clear step-by-step directions. Throughout the camp, students will learn how to brainstorm ideas, organize their thinking with thinking maps, move from simple sentences to strong paragraphs, and practice multiple third grade writing genres including journal, narrative, opinion, persuasive, and instructional writing. The camp will conclude with a fun culminating kitchen activity where students follow their own how-to writing to create a simple snack or treat such as lemonade or trail mix, allowing them to experience writing as real-world instructions. By the end of camp, students will feel confident, prepared, and excited to write in third grade.
